The Gold Standard HEC Personal Lubricant
A clean, clinical-grade water-based personal lubricant using Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC). Smooth, skin-compatible, and incredibly easy to make at home.
When it comes to personal lubrication, the simplest formulations are often the safest. Commercial lubes are packed with humectants, flavorings, and thickeners that spike osmolality and irritate sensitive mucosal linings.
This Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) recipe is the clinical gold standard. It mimics natural vaginal secretions, maintains perfect pH-compatibility, and has an osmolality of approximately 280 to 320 mOsm/kg (perfectly isotonic to your cells).
Why Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC)?
Unlike “natural” thickeners like aloe vera (which contains raw plant sugars that trigger yeast blooms) or cornstarch (which clumps, molds, and is highly abrasive), HEC is an inert, semi-synthetic polymer. It:
- Does not ferment or feed bacteria.
- Is completely water-soluble and non-staining.
- Offers excellent shear-thinning properties (it becomes more fluid under friction, then recovers its thick texture when at rest).
The Recipe & Proportions (for 200g batch)
| Ingredient | Percentage | Weight (grams) | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distilled Water | 95.8% | 191.6g | Base solvent |
| HEC Powder | 1.8% | 3.6g | Gelling polymer |
| Glycerin | 2.0% | 4.0g | Water retention |
| Liquid Germall Plus | 0.4% | 0.8g | Preservative |
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Sanitize Your Workspace
Before starting, sanitize all beakers, spatulas, scales, and your storage bottle with 70% Isopropyl alcohol. Let them air-dry completely. Because we are using water, absolute cleanliness is key!
2. Disperse the HEC
Weigh out the Distilled Water in your beaker. HEC powder dissolves best when it is slowly sprinkled into room-temperature water while stirring rapidly. This prevents clumping (known as “fish eyes”).
3. Hydrate the Gel
Stir the mixture for 3-5 minutes. The water will still look cloudy, and the HEC will not be fully dissolved yet. This is normal.
- Cover the beaker with plastic wrap and let it sit for 1.5 to 2 hours.
- As it sits, the HEC polymers will swell with water, forming a crystal-clear, rich, thick gel. Give it a final stir after 2 hours.
4. Add the Humectant and Preservative
Once the gel is clear and thick, weigh and add the Glycerin and Liquid Germall Plus. Whisk thoroughly for 2 minutes to ensure the preservative is completely distributed throughout the thick gel.
5. Bottle and Store
Pour your fresh lubricant into your sanitized squeeze bottle. Because of the Liquid Germall Plus preservative, this batch is fully shelf-stable for 1 to 2 years at room temperature! Keep it out of direct sunlight.
